How to Choose a Professional Painter in Wicklow and Wexford

October 23, 2026

A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel completely different. Getting a finish that lasts, however, depends on more than choosing a colour and opening a tin of paint. Surface preparation, the condition of the walls and the way the work is carried out all affect the final result.

If you are searching for a professional painter in Gorey, Carnew or Tonahely, it helps to know what to look for before accepting a quote. A little preparation at the start can save time, money and frustration later.

Start with the work your property actually needs

Before contacting a painter, walk through the rooms or areas you want to improve. Look for peeling paint, cracked plaster, stained ceilings and surfaces that may need more preparation than a straightforward repaint.

A room with sound walls and a reasonably recent finish may require relatively little work. An older property with flaking coatings or damaged plaster will need a different approach.

Think about the intended result, too. You may want to refresh a living room, repaint an entire house before moving in or update a kitchen without replacing the existing cupboards. Explaining the purpose of the project gives the contractor a clearer starting point.

If you are unsure about colours or finishes, prepare a few reference photographs. They can help communicate the look you have in mind without relying on vague descriptions.

Why surface preparation matters

Paint tends to show the quality of the surface beneath it. Cracks, dents and loose coatings can remain visible after repainting if they are not addressed properly.

Depending on the condition of the room, preparation may include filling minor defects, sanding rough areas, removing loose paint and applying a suitable primer. Stained or damaged surfaces may require additional treatment before the finish coat is applied.

Moisture problems should be investigated before painting. A damp patch caused by a roof leak, for example, may return through fresh paint if the underlying problem remains unresolved.

When comparing quotes, ask what preparation is included. This is one of the clearest ways to understand whether two prices cover the same work.

What should a painting quote include?

A useful quotation explains the scope of work in plain language. It should identify the rooms or surfaces being painted and make clear whether preparation, repairs, materials and clean-up are included.

Ask about the type of paint proposed and the number of coats allowed for. The right specification will depend on the surface and its existing condition.

You should also discuss timing. If you need a bedroom ready by a certain date or want work completed before moving into a property, tell the contractor early. Drying times and additional repairs can affect the schedule.

Do not choose a painter on price alone. A low quote may be perfectly reasonable, but it is worth checking that the scope and materials are comparable with other estimates.

Choosing paint for different rooms

Different areas of a house experience different levels of wear. A quiet spare bedroom may not need the same finish as a busy hallway or kitchen.

For kitchens and bathrooms, consider how much moisture, grease and regular cleaning the surfaces will face. A suitable washable coating can be useful, but the underlying ventilation and moisture conditions still matter.

Hallways and stairs tend to receive more contact than many other rooms. A finish that can tolerate routine cleaning may be more practical than one chosen purely for appearance.

Ceilings also deserve attention. A fresh ceiling finish can improve the overall look of a room, especially when the walls are being repainted at the same time.

How to prepare your home before the painter arrives

You can make the process easier by clearing small items from the rooms and moving fragile belongings out of the working area. Ask the contractor what furniture needs to be moved and whether any preparation is expected from you.

Agree on how access will work if you are living in the property during the job. It may be easier to complete one room at a time, depending on the layout and schedule.

Keep pets and children away from active work areas, particularly where tools, wet coatings or ladders are in use. Follow any ventilation and access guidance provided for the products being applied.

Questions worth asking before you book

Before agreeing to a job, establish who will carry out the work, what is included in the price and how additional repairs will be handled. Ask how the contractor plans to protect floors and furniture, and whether the quote includes cleaning up afterwards.

It is also reasonable to ask for examples of relevant completed work or customer feedback. Look for information that relates to the type of project you are planning rather than relying on broad claims alone.

Clear communication matters. You should understand what will be done, when the work is expected to begin and what happens if the scope changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth hiring a professional painter for one room?

It can be, particularly if the surfaces need repair or you want a consistent finish. The decision depends on the room, your own experience and the time available.

Should I buy the paint myself?

Discuss this with the contractor before work begins. Some quotes include materials, while others may handle them differently. Make sure the agreement is clear.

How long will a painting job take?

The time required depends on the room size, preparation, number of coats and drying conditions. Ask for an estimated schedule based on your particular project.
