Pipe Wrenches and Belt Sanders in Ireland: Two Tools Worth Buying Properly

Pipe wrenches and belt sanders have nothing in common. One grips the round pipe, the other grinds flat metal. Yet the same person usually buys both: a fitter, fabricator, or farm workshop owner who wants jobs finished without a fight.

This guide covers pipe wrenches and belt sanders, with plain advice on size, grit, and the mistakes that wear tools out early.

Pipe Wrenches

How a pipe wrench grips

The jaws are hooked and serrated so they bite into the round pipe. Pressure on the handle pulls the hooked jaw tighter, which is why the tool grips harder the more you lean on it. That also makes it brutal on anything it grips. Teeth leave marks, so a pipe wrench belongs on pipes, and rough fittings are nowhere near chrome.

Seat the jaws deep on the pipe and pull the handle towards you rather than pushing it away. If the wrench slips, your hand goes backwards into open space instead of into the pipe.

Size and material

Pick the length to suit the pipe. A wrench too small for the job strains and slips, and one too large is awkward in tight places. The figures below are rough nominal pipe capacities, so check the maker’s own specification before buying.

Wrench length	Approx. pipe size	Typical use
10 inch	Up to about 1½ inch	Small fittings and tight spaces
14 inch	Up to about 2 inch	General plumbing and compressed air lines
18 inch	Up to about 2½ inch	Heavier pipework and workshop jobs
24 inch	Up to about 3 inch	Large threaded pipe and stubborn joints
36 inch	Up to about 5 inch	Big pipe where leverage matters

Handles come in cast iron or aluminium. Cast iron is heavy and tough. Aluminium weighs far less, which makes a real difference when you’re working overhead or carrying a wrench all day. Look for jaws that can be replaced, because teeth wear long before the body does.

What not to do

Don’t slip a length of tube over the handle for extra leverage. If something breaks, it breaks suddenly. Use a longer wrench instead. A pipe wrench is also a bad choice for hex nuts, since it chews the corners off. For those, use an adjustable wrench or a proper spanner set. Locking grips hold awkward shapes better than a pipe wrench ever will.

For cutting pipe cleanly before you thread or weld it, a tube cutter leaves a square end. Welders marking the pipe for notching can look at the pipe wrap range.

Belt Sanders

In a metalworking shop, a belt sander is a linisher. It takes the bead off a weld, deburrs cut edges, shapes tool steel and puts a finish on stainless. It does the work of a lot of hand filing in a fraction of the time.

Choosing a machine

The right machine depends on where you work and what you shape.

Type	Best for	Watch for
Bench belt sander	Shaping, deburring and flat grinding	Needs bench space and a solid mount
Belt and disc combination	Mixed shop work	A tool rest set close to the belt
Hand-held band file	Reaching into frames and tight corners	Smaller belts wear faster

Motor power matters because steel holds heat. A weak motor bogs down under pressure, and you end up pushing harder, which overheats the work. If you also grind and shape, a bench grinder is a natural partner, and a vice holds the odd shapes.

Belts and grit

The belt does the cutting, so sanding belts matter more than most buyers realise. Aluminium oxide handles general steel work. Ceramic and zirconia belts cost more and last much longer on stainless and heavy stock removal because they run cooler.

Grit works in stages. Coarse belts around 36 to 60 grit take off weld beads and hog out metal. Medium belts at 80 to 120 blend the surface. Fine belts above 180 give a finish. Jump too far between stages, and you’ll spend an hour chasing the scratches from the last belt.

Light pressure is the rule. Let the belt cut. Lean hard, and you’ll blue the steel, load the belt with metal, and shorten its life. Dip hot work in water, but never wet the machine.

Stay safe at the belt

Safety glasses are non-negotiable, and a good eye protection range is worth browsing. Wear a dust mask too, because grinding stainless and coated steel throws fine particles you shouldn’t breathe. Keep sleeves tucked and long hair tied back, and keep the gap between belt and tool rest small so work can’t catch.

Sparks and dust are a fire risk together. Keep the machine away from sawdust and solvents, and don’t sand aluminium and steel on the same belt, since aluminium dust burns readily and steel sparks can light it. A belt kept for each metal costs little.

Summary

Buy a pipe wrench to match the pipe, check the replacement jaws and use it only where marking doesn’t matter. Buy a belt sander for the work you actually do, and choose the belt grit as carefully as the machine. Both tools reward patience and punish force.
